After 10 years with the Edgars group where he was an Area Manager, Merchandise Controller, Research Manager and Group Strategic Planning Manager, Douglas left to start his own consulting business specializing in market research and strategic retail planning at the end of 1978.
The company – Douglas Parker Associates – thrived and became one of the major retail consultancies in South Africa, undertaking a wide range of planning and research services for retail chains. With the advent of regional shopping centres the company developed specialized skills in assessing market potentials and became a leader in this field. After 33 years at the helm Douglas sold the company and retired to Hermanus.
After a year of watching whales, however, he craved the intellectual stimulation of working with clients and solving problems, and Parker Analytics was born and now operates in both South Africa and New Zealand.
Douglas also founded the Retailers Liaison Committee in 1977 and co-ordinated that body for 7 years. He was closely involved with the Bureau of Market Research at UNISA for 35 years and was Chairman of various Projects Committees. He has been a regular guest lecturer at the University of Cape Town, and has served on the National committee of SAMRA.
Douglas’s main interest lies in statistical modelling techniques for analysing and predicting consumer behaviour and optimizing business performance.
He has presented technical papers at ESOMAR Retail Conferences in Europe, as well as at SAMRA, SAPOA, SACSC, SAITRP and Media Planners conferences in South Africa.
